Let's do more than save the 760 area code because we want it,
let's be smart about why ANY area code should even change.
20 years ago changing an area code was simple. Coordinate the change with the publication of phone books and then let businesses fend for themselves. Many traditional "Encyclopedia Heads" need to think about the 21st Century "Google Heads" and digital technology. Changing any area code no longer affects the local community, it affects all your connections around the world!
What's different today than 20 years ago?
There are millions more people around the world storing digital information.
- Think of the millions of databases around the world that store 1000 or even hundreds of thousands 760 phone numbers that have to be updated. How many businesses have customer, vendor, and contact databases? Millions of us have 1000's to 100,000's of contacts that need to be sorted through.
- Think of the millions of users with hundreds of online services that we have signed up for that store our 760 area code. What happens when these online services need to contact you by phone and you don't update every service you have signed up for? What happens if you need to verify you phone number?
- Think of the billion Internet web pages around the world that store 760 area codes that need to be updated all over the world. What happens when many sites don't get updated? So when technology moves forward to use the Internet for 411 information, think of the confusion that will be created. And if web pages do get changed many pages are still "cached" (saved copy for faster viewing).
- Think of the millions of pages of online directory services around the world that have 760 area codes that need to be updated. What kind of confusion will this create for the digital world?
What's different today than 20 years ago?
There are millions more businesses around the world storing digital information.
- Think of the millions of email and exchange servers around the world that hold contact information. Everyone has contact information stored in email systems and databases. We depend on an accurate digital world. Why can't we think of how the world works now and come up with a solution that works with our digital world?
- Think of the 10's of millions cell phones around the world that store 760 area codes that need to be change and updated. What about the millions of phones around the world that don't even know about the change?
- Think of the 10's of millions other PDA's and mobile devices around the world that store 760 area code that need to be change and updated. How many of us can live without our digital technology in the 21st century?
- Think of millions of devices that use a 760 phone number to notify us of an event. What has to be done with all the digital systems to ensure security and fire systems have the correct area codes?
- Think of all the 1000 business cards that are on your desk are now useless. Stop and think of all the contact literature, marketing pieces and business cards sitting on your desk? Would you pass that card on to someone with the wrong phone number?
- Think the millions of SMS messaging systems set up all over the world with the 760 area code. What happens when that important business or life saving message gets delivered to the wrong person?
- Along with all the 21st century technology issues, we still have to change millions of business cards, letterhead, signage, fax machines, phonebooks, message machines and much more.
What's different today than 20 years ago?
There are millions more people & businesses using digital storage & the web.
Think of the millions of pages that Blogs use, Think of the millions of pages that newspapers make available, Think of the million of pages that magazines, Think of the millions of pages use in advertising on the web, Think of the millions of pages of reviews on the web, Think of the millions of network directories on the Internet set up all over the world with the 760 area code. Most of these are historical documents that are now made available through the Internet and will never get changed.
Our local environment is ingrained into the Internet that connects us to the nation and the world. What happens to our local economy and connection to the world? A phone number should be like a social security number. If we run out of SS numbers are we going to change a persons SS number? Not likely. So why change our phone number at all.
Because of this change
it will affect the environment. More than likely much of the old letter head, business cards, and signage will be thrown out to fill our landfills that are already overflowing. Changing our area code will not be a "green" solution for our environment .
Just imagine the
millions of dollars that will be lost for everyone to make changes in the event that the 760 area code does change. In this economy wouldn't that money be better spent on growing our local communities? Changing the area code
will make a tough economy even tougher.
Why should we continue to think like a
traditional "Encyclopedia Head"?
Let's use a solution that works with the
"Google Head" digital & technology world!
